How to recycle coffee packaging in Switzerland

Coffee packaging is often more complicated than it looks. A brown bag may contain a plastic barrier layer, a shiny pouch may be metallised plastic rather than recyclable aluminium, and a capsule marked "compostable" may require an industrial process that the local green-waste collection does not accept.

In Switzerland, follow the collection route that actually exists where you live. Separate clean components when they come apart easily, use the dedicated aluminium-capsule system, and check the municipality or collection operator before putting unfamiliar packaging into a recycling stream.

The Swiss Recycling Map lists more than 12,000 collection points and the materials accepted at each one. Municipal waste pages remain important because kerbside and paid-bag systems differ.

Why coffee bags are difficult to recycle #

Roasted coffee needs protection from oxygen, moisture, light and odours. Flexible packs often combine several functions:

  • plastic for seals and moisture resistance;
  • aluminium foil or a metallised film as an oxygen barrier;
  • paper for stiffness and appearance;
  • inks, adhesive and a one-way degassing valve.

These layers preserve the coffee, but bonded materials are difficult to separate. A kraft surface does not make the complete pouch paper. A metallic appearance does not make it household aluminium. The valve may also use a different polymer from the bag.

Swiss Recycle's paper and cardboard guidance specifically excludes coffee and tea bags, plastic-coated paper and laminated cardboard from the paper stream. Put a clean cardboard sleeve in the cardboard collection if it separates easily. Treat the inner pouch according to its own material and the local collection rules.

Aluminium capsules need their own collection #

Swiss Recycle is explicit: used aluminium coffee capsules go into specially marked capsule containers, not the container for ordinary household aluminium. The dedicated route is designed to separate the aluminium from the coffee grounds.

Accepted brands are not limited to one coffee-machine company when the capsule is aluminium and the collection point follows the Swiss Aluminium Capsule Recycling system. Check the logo and the point's instructions. Plastic and composite capsules do not belong there.

Collection options include many municipal recycling centres, Nespresso boutiques, Migros branches, some other partner shops and, for eligible services, collection organised by the supplier. Availability varies, so the map or local listing is more reliable than an old national list.

There is usually no reason to wash every capsule with hot water. Let very wet capsules drain and store them in a container that avoids leakage and odour until return. Follow a collection point's instructions if it asks for different preparation.

Plastic and composite capsules #

At the update date, Swiss Recycle directs plastic and composite coffee capsules away from the dedicated aluminium-capsule collection and into household waste when no other accepted route is available. A manufacturer's return programme can be used if it genuinely collects that exact product in Switzerland.

Do not infer collection from the resin-identification triangle alone. A material may be technically recyclable while lacking sorting, transport and reprocessing for that item in the local system. Likewise, a programme advertised in another country does not prove that the Swiss branch accepts it.

Switzerland's packaging rules are changing. The Federal Council adopted a new Packaging Ordinance in June 2026, due to take effect on 1 January 2027. It introduces wider requirements, including a national separate-collection framework for plastic packaging and beverage cartons. Until collection details are implemented where you live, follow the current municipality or retailer instructions. After 2027, recheck rather than assuming this page's 2026 route remains unchanged.

Compostable does not mean universally compostable #

Three words are commonly confused:

  • bio-based describes where some or all raw material came from;
  • biodegradable says that material can break down under stated conditions and timeframes;
  • compostable should refer to compliance with conditions for a particular composting environment.

An industrially compostable capsule may not break down properly in a cool home compost heap. A municipal facility may reject compostable packaging because its process is too short or because operators cannot distinguish it from conventional plastic. Coffee grounds may be welcome while the capsule shell is not.

Use an organic-waste route only when the municipality, facility or collection service explicitly accepts that capsule type. If the package names a standard, read whether it refers to industrial or home composting. A vague leaf symbol is not enough.

Flexible coffee pouches #

For a bag of beans or ground coffee:

  1. Empty it fully and keep it dry.
  2. Remove a clean cardboard sleeve if it comes away without effort.
  3. Look for a clear material and disposal instruction intended for Switzerland.
  4. Check whether the local paid household-plastics bag accepts flexible packaging.
  5. Use a documented roaster take-back only if it states what happens to the returned bags.
  6. Otherwise use residual waste rather than contaminating paper, PET-bottle or aluminium collections.

PET collection in Switzerland is primarily a route for accepted PET beverage bottles. A coffee pouch containing a polyester layer is not a PET beverage bottle. Similar material names do not create the same collection route.

The Federal Office for the Environment also notes that imported symbols such as the Green Dot have little disposal meaning in Switzerland. They may describe participation in a foreign financing system, not tell a Swiss household where to put the item.

Paper, kraft and cardboard #

Clean, uncoated paper or cardboard can normally enter the relevant municipal collection. Problems begin with laminated structures, plastic film, heavy contamination and permanently attached components.

Use these checks:

  • Does the package consist of paper throughout, or is there a visible inner film?
  • Can the clean cardboard outer box be separated from the bag?
  • Is the pack dry and free of loose coffee?
  • Does the municipality list this exact type of packaging?

Do not compost a printed, laminated pouch with a plastic valve merely because the outer layer is kraft. Do not tear it into the paper stream in the hope that small pieces will be sorted. If the materials cannot be separated and no dedicated route accepts them, residual waste is the safer choice for the recycling system.

Tins, jars and reusable containers #

An empty metal coffee tin can go to the local metal collection when that stream accepts the material. Remove loose coffee and keep it reasonably clean. Reusing the tin for filters or accessories before recycling can extend its useful life.

Glass jars belong in the glass system only after caps and other components are handled according to local instructions. A returnable jar is most effective when the roaster actually takes it back, washes it efficiently and refills it several times. A heavy single-use jar is not automatically environmentally better than a light pouch.

The Federal Office for the Environment stresses a life-cycle approach: prevent unnecessary packaging first, consider reuse, then design and collect the remaining packaging for recycling. Transport, material weight, product protection and food waste all matter. Packaging that keeps coffee usable can avoid waste, so the lightest package is not automatically the best in every situation.

What to do with coffee grounds #

Loose coffee grounds can go into home compost or municipal biowaste when those routes accept food waste. Let them cool and avoid adding non-compostable capsule shells, plastic labels or large quantities of milk residue.

Grounds are not a reason to put the whole package into organic waste. Separate them only when the product and collection instructions make that practical. Dedicated aluminium-capsule processing is already designed to recover the grounds, so capsules do not need to be cut open for that route.

Reduce waste before sorting it #

Recycling is useful, but prevention and reuse come first in the Swiss waste hierarchy. Practical choices include:

  • buy a pack size that will be finished while the coffee is still enjoyable;
  • choose beans or ground coffee instead of single portions when that suits the routine;
  • use refill or return systems that publish a real local collection process;
  • favour packaging with clear Swiss disposal instructions;
  • avoid individually wrapped portions when one larger pack will be consumed without waste;
  • prepare only the amount of coffee that will be drunk.

Changing method can affect both packaging and cost. The calculation of coffee cost per cup in Switzerland makes the assumptions visible when comparing bags and capsules.

A final check before disposal #

  • Is the item one material or a bonded laminate?
  • Is an aluminium capsule going to the dedicated capsule collection?
  • Is the cardboard clean, dry and genuinely separable?
  • Does the local organic-waste operator accept the stated compostable product?
  • Does a plastic collection accept flexible pouches, not just bottles?
  • Has the municipality changed its rules under the 2027 transition?

Correct sorting is better than optimistic sorting. Aluminium capsules have a specific route, clean separable cardboard belongs with cardboard, compostables require explicit acceptance, and laminated pouches need an identified plastics or take-back system. Where no valid route exists, residual waste prevents contamination of materials that can actually be recycled.
