Climate change does not mean that coffee will disappear overnight. It means that some regions are becoming riskier, yields and quality are less predictable, producers must invest sooner, and buyers need to read climate claims more critically.
In short, Arabica is particularly exposed to higher temperatures, drought, irregular rainfall and disease. Growing regions will not all respond in the same way, but available models show clear pressure across several major production areas. Shade, agroforestry, adapted varieties, better water management, traceability and more stable contracts can help. No single measure makes the supply chain automatically carbon-neutral or risk-free.

Why coffee is sensitive to climate #
Coffee is a perennial crop. A coffee tree remains in place for many years and sometimes decades, so growers make decisions today whose consequences last: variety, planting density, shade, irrigation, plot renovation and soil protection.
Arabica, common in specialty coffee, is more demanding than Robusta. It generally performs best in relatively cool areas, often at altitude. Higher temperatures can accelerate ripening, increase water stress and create more favourable conditions for some pests and diseases. Robusta tolerates heat better, but it is not invulnerable: severe drought, poorly timed rain and disease can affect it too.
A 2022 PLOS ONE study modelled the biophysical suitability of land for Arabica coffee, cashew and avocado in 2050 using 14 global climate models and three emissions scenarios. Coffee was the most vulnerable of the three crops, with negative climate effects dominating in the main producing countries studied. Such models do not predict the price of your pack or the yield of an individual farm. They show why adaptation has become central.
What changes on a coffee farm #
Climate does not affect coffee through one mechanism. Pressures often accumulate.

Avoid shortcuts. One hot year does not explain every defect, and an exposed region is not doomed. Soil, altitude, shade, varieties, technical support, access to credit and post-harvest skill all change the situation from farm to farm.
Will growing areas move? #
Partly, yes. But moving does not mean simply climbing a little higher and carrying on as before. Cooler land may already be occupied, protected, too steep, far from infrastructure or important for biodiversity. Replanting costs money and several years of potential income.
World Coffee Research summarises research on Arabica agroecological zones. Models project substantial contractions in several hot, dry areas by 2050, alongside some possible expansion. Its page on Arabica agroecological zones chiefly shows how strongly outcomes differ by location and scenario. A suitability map does not predict the exact yield, quality or economic viability of a farm.
Some high-altitude or equatorial areas may prove more resilient, whereas warm regions with long dry seasons are more vulnerable. Available flavour profiles, country volumes, prices and lot consistency may change. Specialty coffee is not exempt, although its traceability can sometimes provide better information for adaptation. Adaptation: credible measures and their limits #
The strongest responses combine agronomy, finance, traceability and local support.
Better-adapted varieties #
Selecting varieties better able to cope with heat, disease or local conditions is essential. In 2026, World Coffee Research presents CafeClima, a free platform combining climate projections with performance results for 26 varieties from a multi-location trial involving partners in 18 countries. It informs a local choice; it does not guarantee a successful planting.
The limitation is straightforward. Planting the wrong variety is costly, while planting a suitable one does not guarantee a viable income. Farmers also need a market, cup quality, reliable processing and a buyer prepared to support the transition.
Shade and agroforestry #
Shade can reduce heat stress, protect soil, support biodiversity and diversify income when trees produce fruit, timber or other goods. World Coffee Research's Shade Catalog brings together information about useful trees in coffee landscapes in several countries.
Context still matters. Too much shade can reduce yields in some situations, and tree species must be chosen carefully. Agroforestry is a strategy, not a universal recipe.
Water, soil and post-harvest processing #
Water management becomes decisive where dry seasons lengthen or rainfall intensifies. Ground cover, terraces, mulch, water harvesting, wastewater treatment and controlled drying can help. These choices also protect quality: poorly dried or stored coffee can lose much of its value even when it comes from an excellent plot.
The domestic parallel is modest but useful. Avoiding waste, buying a sensible pack size and storing coffee properly prevents a demanding product from being discarded.
Contracts, prices and training #
Climate increases investment needs. Many producers lack the margin to renovate a farm, plant trees, install irrigation or wait for a new plot to bear fruit. Fairtrade's coffee page describes how volatile prices, disease, weather and unstable incomes make this transition harder for many small-scale farmers.
Labels and sustainability programmes can help, but they cover different issues. Fairtrade provides trading terms with a minimum price and premium, Rainforest Alliance a broader farm and supply-chain standard, and organic certification rules for production and processing. What buyers in Switzerland can verify #
A shopper cannot control the weather in Brazil, Colombia, Vietnam or Ethiopia. They can, however, look for concrete information instead of vague claims:
- a precise origin: country, region, farm or cooperative;
- a roast date or clear freshness information;
- details about shade, agroforestry, organic farming, variety and processing;
- a label and its real scope;
- a roaster able to explain purchasing and its limits;
- a format suited to actual consumption: beans, ground coffee, pods or capsules;
- a genuine collection route for capsules or complex packaging.
Coffee is covered by the EU Deforestation Regulation. As at 2 September 2026, its principal obligations do not yet apply. They begin on 30 December 2026 for large and medium operators and on 30 June 2027 for micro and small operators, except those already covered by the former EU Timber Regulation. Switzerland is not an EU member, but supply chains serving several markets can be affected. Precise origin makes a claim easier to verify; it is not proof of deforestation-free production by itself.

False solutions to avoid #
“Carbon-neutral coffee” may be meaningful when the calculation boundary, actual reductions and any offsetting are clear. Unexplained offsets do not replace traceability, soil protection or viable producer income.
“Local coffee” also needs context. Coffee may be roasted in Switzerland, but it is grown elsewhere. Swiss roasting can bring freshness and transparency without removing the impact of farming.
“Robusta will save everything” is too simple. Robusta may tolerate heat better than Arabica, but it has its own requirements and market. It can contribute body and crema to blends; it cannot replace an adaptation strategy for every origin.
“Just switch to organic” is incomplete. Organic rules restrict certain inputs and establish controlled farming practices, but they do not alone guarantee climate adaptation, fair income, freedom from deforestation or superior flavour.
