Can a budget coffee maker brew good coffee?

Yes, a budget filter machine can make good coffee. It will not turn stale grounds into an exceptional lot or replace espresso, but suitable dose, grind, water, filter, cleaning and prompt serving can produce a pleasant cup. Control the variables that a basic appliance does not stabilise.

What “budget” means #

This usually describes an electric drip maker with reservoir, heater, filter basket, glass carafe and hotplate but few settings. Lower cost may mean lighter materials, simpler water distribution, less temperature control and variable spare-part support.

Those limits do not automatically make bad coffee. They reduce tolerance for mistakes. Freshly ground, correctly dosed coffee from a modest machine may taste better than old coffee from expensive equipment.

It suits several filter servings, a small budget and easy operation. It disappoints when espresso, automatic milk or detailed flow control is expected. The coffee-maker selection guide compares moka, press and hand filter as alternatives.

Five factors more important than price #

1. Dose #

Begin around 55 to 60 g per litre. SCA certification requirements use approximately 55 g/l as a Gold Cup reference and also test temperature, contact time and extraction.

Water Cautious start Stronger
250 ml 14 to 15 g 16 to 18 g
500 ml 28 to 30 g 32 to 36 g
750 ml 42 to 45 g 48 to 54 g
1 litre 55 to 60 g 65 to 70 g

Scales are more reliable than a scoop whose weight changes with grind and packing.

2. Grind #

A medium grind normally suits electric filter brewing. Too coarse or too little coffee gives a weak, sour cup. Too fine, too much coffee or excessive contact can taste bitter and astringent. An overflowing basket may indicate fine grounds, excessive dose or a blocked filter.

A decent hand grinder may improve the cup more than moving up one machine tier. See the grinding guide.

3. Water #

Water makes up almost the entire drink. Strong chlorine or mineral taste remains noticeable. Hardness varies among Swiss municipalities. If flavour is marked or scale forms quickly, test an appropriate filter without treating nearly mineral-free water as a universal ideal.

Do not pour boiling water into an electric reservoir unless the manual allows it. Preheat a carafe and filter holder with hot water instead.

4. Filter #

Paper retains fines and many oils, producing a clearer cup. A permanent filter passes more oil and sediment. This is a style difference, not a universal quality ranking. Thick or unbleached papers may benefit from a hot rinse when their maker permits it.

5. Freshness #

Ground coffee loses aroma faster than beans. AboutCoffee recommends an airtight, cool, dry and dark location. With limited money, a simple machine plus fresh beans and a suitable grinder often makes more sense than a dearer machine using coffee open for weeks.

A repeatable test #

  1. Clean and, if necessary, descale the machine.
  2. Use 500 ml fresh water and 30 g medium-ground coffee.
  3. Rinse the paper if appropriate.
  4. Level the bed without tamping.
  5. Stir and taste immediately after brewing.
  6. Change only grind or dose next time.

This separates recipe limitations from appliance limitations.

Typical weaknesses #

Simple machines may not reach or hold brewing temperature evenly. A small shower head can wet the bed unevenly. The hotplate may continue cooking finished coffee, so serve soon or transfer it into a preheated flask.

Poor care makes every weakness worse. Scale slows flow and heat transfer; coffee oil muddies flavour. Wash basket and carafe after use and descale for local hardness.

Buying checks and alternatives #

Look for a removable basket, visible tank, appropriate capacity, safe carafe, automatic shut-off and replacement carafe. EU Regulation 2023/826 has governed standby and off modes for many products since May 2025; clear shut-off and sensible consumption remain useful in Switzerland too.

Hand filter gives more control for one cup, French press more body, moka more intensity and AeroPress more flexibility. The electric budget maker wins when several servings are wanted at one button press.

Verdict #

Do not expect espresso or a perfect temperature curve. Supply fresh coffee, medium grind, sensible ratio, pleasant water, a clean filter and quick service. A coherent low-cost setup can taste considerably better than its purchase price suggests.
