Before buying a compatible capsule, identify the exact system. A capsule designed for Nespresso Original does not fit Vertuo. Only then should you compare price per useful cup, material, collection route, availability and flavour at your usual serving size.
The useful question is not simply “official or compatible?” It is: compatible with which machine, intended for which volume, delivering what result, and going where after use?

Original and Vertuo #
Original uses the small truncated-cone capsule and centres on ristretto, espresso and lungo. Vertuo uses wider dome-shaped capsules, a printed code and a broader range of drink sizes. Nespresso's Swiss help states explicitly that an Original capsule cannot be used in a Vertuo machine.
Third-party Original supply is much wider. Vertuo alternatives may remain limited by country and period. A label saying only “Nespresso compatible” is inadequate. Domestic and Professional formats also differ.
Never force the mechanism. A misshapen or wrongly sized capsule may leak, perforate badly or jam. Find the full model name on its label, manual or underside before ordering a large pack.
What to inspect #
- System: Original, Vertuo, Professional or another platform.
- Exclusions: unsupported models or generations.
- Material: aluminium, plastic, composite, plant fibre or reusable.
- Recommended size: ristretto, espresso or lungo; too much water dilutes the dose.
- Return route: dedicated aluminium collection, producer scheme or municipal waste.
- Pack size: test a small box first.
Mechanical fit does not guarantee enjoyable coffee. Rapid flow, a pale cup, unstable crema or heavy roast bitterness can occur even when dimensions are correct.
Calculate the cup you drink #
Divide the total paid, including delivery, by portions actually enjoyed. A ten-pack costing CHF 4.80 equals CHF 0.48 per capsule. If two flavours remain unused, the eight useful drinks cost CHF 0.60 each. This is an example of the method, not a market-price claim.

Compare taste fairly #
Dose, grind, roast, residual gas, oxygen barrier, capsule geometry and resistance all influence extraction. Compare products in the same clean machine and at the same programmed volume.

Swiss recycling #
Swiss Recycle says aluminium coffee capsules must go into specially marked containers, not any household-aluminium bin. The route accepts aluminium capsules from several brands; plastic and composite portions do not belong there. Recovered grounds may be used, for example, in biogas production.
Nespresso points users to collection sites, boutiques, partners and Recycling at Home. Use the current map rather than relying on a fixed site count. A recyclable capsule discarded in rubbish does not enter that loop.
Plastic and composite products need a producer scheme or municipal rule. Put compostable packaging into organic waste only when the local facility accepts it. “Bio-based”, “biodegradable” and “home-compostable” are not synonyms.
Material and maintenance #
Aluminium protects coffee and has a recognisable Swiss collection route but remains one package per serving. Plastic may be cheaper yet needs a credible destination. Poor flow with every brand suggests maintenance rather than one defective capsule. Clean the tank, outlet, tray and container and descale according to the manual and water hardness.
Takeaway #
Treat compatible capsules as a technical consumable. Identify the platform, test a small pack, calculate the coffee actually drunk and plan disposal before stocking up. The best compromise fits without force, tastes good to you and reaches a collection route you really use.
