Choose a coffee grinder according to the brewing method before considering its brand or appearance. For filter, French press, moka pot and AeroPress at one or two servings a day, a sound manual burr grinder often offers excellent value. An electric burr grinder is more convenient for several drinks or a rushed morning. Espresso through a single-wall basket needs particularly fine, stable and repeatable adjustment. A grinder that works well for filter may have steps that are too broad for it.
The question of flat versus conical burrs is valid, but it comes after more important criteria: consistent grounds, the right adjustment range, a stable mechanism, easy cleaning and comfortable operation. Burr geometry alone cannot tell you whether a particular grinder performs well.

Blade or burr grinder? #
A blade grinder chops beans with a rapidly rotating blade. It tends to produce both very fine powder and much larger fragments. Different particle sizes extract at different rates, making the cup difficult to correct systematically.
A burr grinder crushes and fractures beans between two defined surfaces. The gap between them determines the average particle size. This is the more useful principle for repeatable filter coffee, moka, French press or espresso.

Manual or electric grinder? #

The effort is real. Fine espresso settings and light, dense roasts require more force. Several large filter batches in succession can become slow. Check whether the grip, handle length, body diameter and catch cup feel comfortable in your hands.
Electric grinder #
An electric grinder saves time and is easier in a household with several coffee drinkers. A timer or built-in weighing system can make the routine more repeatable. In return, it uses worktop space, creates motor noise and usually costs more for similar burr quality.
Do not judge it by motor power alone. The correct grind range, even bean feed, stable burr mounting, sensible dosing and access to the grind chamber and chute matter more.
Flat or conical without dogma #
Conical burrs are common in manual and compact electric grinders. Flat burrs often appear in larger electric machines, including many designed for espresso. Either design can produce excellent or inconsistent grounds.

For filter and French press, aim for a reasonably narrow particle spread without an excessive proportion of fines. Moka needs a stable medium-fine range that does not choke the funnel. AeroPress accepts a broad range, so it pairs well with a versatile grinder.

Keep dose, water and time constant during the comparison. Otherwise you cannot tell whether the grinder or a simultaneous recipe change caused the difference.
Retention, noise and capacity #
Retention is the ground coffee left in the chamber, chute or around the burrs after grinding. A small amount matters less when the same beans are used every day. When changing coffee or single-dosing precisely, stale grounds can affect the next serving.
Manufacturer retention figures are comparable only when the test method is the same. Permanent dead space, grounds held briefly and grounds released later are not always defined alike. Look at the cleaning design and independent measurements as well as a headline number.
Noise is a practical issue in Swiss flats and open-plan kitchens. Listen to a grinder under realistic conditions if possible. Pitch and duration may be more irritating than a single decibel value.
Capacity should fit the serving:
- 15 to 20 g for many double espressos or small single-cup filters;
- 25 to 35 g for larger pour-over recipes or a small French press;

Do not grind spices in the same machine. Their oils and aromas can persist. Store coffee sealed, dry, cool and dark. The National Coffee Association identifies air, moisture, heat and light as key enemies of freshness.

Prioritise in this order:
- burrs rather than a blade;
- an adjustment range for the method you actually use;
- stable construction and repeatable adjustment;
- cleaning access and spare parts;
- comfortable operation and acceptable noise;
- electronic extras.
