Bean-to-cup: convenience with a cleaning commitment #

A bean-to-cup machine grinds, doses and brews before collecting the spent grounds. It is convenient for several drinks each day. One person can select café crème and another espresso without manually dialling in a separate grinder.

Strengths:

  • freshly ground beans for each serving;
  • fewer individual packs than capsules;
  • repeatable operation for several users;
  • espresso, longer coffee and sometimes milk drinks from one appliance.

Limitations:

  • purchase and repair can be expensive;
  • drip tray and grounds bin need frequent attention;

A capsule machine fixes dose, grind and portion in advance. It makes sense when consumption is low, users want different coffees or operation needs to be as simple as possible.

Compare these before buying:

  1. the price of the drinks you would genuinely use;
  2. available cup sizes and milk options;
  3. dependence on a proprietary format;
  4. availability of compatible products in Switzerland;
  5. the correct local disposal route.

Aluminium capsules have a separate marked collection stream in Switzerland. Swiss Recycle explicitly states that they do not belong in the household aluminium container. Plastic and composite materials can follow other rules. Collection capacity only has an effect when used capsules are actually sorted and returned.

Portafilter: control with a learning curve #

A manual espresso machine can make excellent espresso when grinder, beans and technique work together. It is not better than a bean-to-cup machine merely because it is manual.

It suits you if you want to:

  • adjust grind and dose deliberately;
  • weigh the drink and correct it by taste;
  • steam milk by hand;
  • clean the equipment after brewing.

The heritage SCA espresso definition uses 7 to 9 g for a single, 25 to 35 ml and 20 to 30 seconds. Modern recipes vary. The Istituto Espresso Italiano describes its certified style mainly by sensory qualities and a volume of about 25 ml. These are reference styles, not outcomes a machine can deliver on its own.

Treat the coffee grinder as part of the system. A straightforward portafilter with a precise grinder can be more useful than an expensive machine fed unsuitable grounds.

Filter machine: large cups for several people #

An electric filter machine automates water heating and distribution. It is well suited to households making several mugs or filling a thermal carafe. A paper filter produces a clear drink without crema.

Check:

  • actual water and coffee capacity;
  • whether the carafe pours cleanly and is easy to wash;
  • thermal carafe or hotplate;
  • access to the filter basket;
  • brewing performance and independent testing.

The SCA Certified Home Brewer programme lists models that have passed defined tests for brewing quality, consistency and performance. It certifies specific products, not every machine made by a listed brand.

Moka pot and French press: simple systems with distinct results #

A moka pot makes strong, concentrated coffee on the hob, but not espresso. It needs a medium-fine grind, gentle heat and a clean safety valve. The Bialetti instructions say not to tamp the coffee or fill water above the valve.

A French press uses immersion and metal filtration. It is inexpensive, easy to understand and effective for one or a few large cups. Its drink has more body and sediment than paper-filtered coffee. Metal filtration also allows more diterpenes through, which can matter for people managing high LDL if they drink large amounts of unfiltered coffee frequently.

Both systems need a separate grinder for fresh grounds, but have few complex parts. A moka pot uses replaceable seals, while the mesh assembly in a French press can often be replaced.

Full cost rather than sale price #

Compare over a period you choose, such as three years:

  • appliance and necessary grinder;
  • beans, capsules or pods per serving;
  • paper and water filters;
  • descaler, cleaners and wearing parts;
  • likely repair or warranty handling;
  • electricity and coffee wasted while adjusting.

A few extra centimes on every daily drink add up. With rare use, the purchase cost dominates instead. No category is automatically cheapest at every frequency.

Maintenance as a selection criterion #

Every system collects coffee oils and residue. Electric machines can also accumulate scale, while milk systems need particular hygiene. Check the manual and the cleaning sequence before buying, not when the first warning symbol appears.

  • Are the drip tray and grounds bin easy to reach?
  • Can the brew unit be removed?
  • How is the milk path rinsed after each use?
  • Which descaling product and process does the maker specify?
