10 mistakes that can damage a coffee machine

A coffee machine is rarely ruined by one forgotten chore. Damage is more often associated with repeated habits: an incorrect water-hardness setting, delayed maintenance, wet grounds left inside, dried milk, an unsuitable acid or beans that cause trouble in an integrated grinder.

The right response depends on the appliance. A bean-to-cup machine, manual espresso machine, filter brewer, capsule system and moka pot should not be treated as though they shared one maintenance routine. The exact model's manual is the controlling reference.

1. Waiting for a blockage before descaling #

Minerals in hard water can form deposits when water is heated. Scale may reduce flow, affect temperature control and make a pump or heater work harder. A blockage is not the only possible sign, however, and slow coffee does not prove that scale is present.

Act on the machine's alert or the interval in its manual. Set water hardness correctly where that feature exists. De'Longhi explains that the setting contributes to the calculation of descaling frequency, so a blanket monthly rule would be inaccurate. 2. Using any available descaler #

Vinegar is often suggested, but it is not a universal solution. De'Longhi prohibits it in fully automatic machines, and other manufacturers likewise require a particular product or proven compatibility. Persistent smell is not the only concern. Acid type and concentration must suit seals, metals and plastics.

For a bean-to-cup, capsule or pumped espresso machine, use the recommended or explicitly compatible product. Even a basic filter brewer needs the manufacturer's concentration, pauses and rinse volume. Bathroom descaler, bleach and mixed acids must never enter a drinking-water circuit.

A moka pot follows different rules because it has no pumped electric water circuit. Its safety valve must stay clear, and its material and maker's instructions determine cleaning. Do not apply a bean-to-cup descaling programme to a moka.

3. Ignoring water hardness and filter mode #

Very hard water promotes scale. Highly mineralised bottled water may leave more deposits than local tap water. Fully demineralised water is not automatically suitable for the appliance or flavour either.

If the machine provides a hardness strip or menu setting, use it accurately. Install only suitable cartridges, activate filter mode where instructed, and replace the cartridge on schedule.

Filters do not all work in the same way. Some extend the interval between descales. JURA says that correctly fitted and programmed CLARIS systems remove the need to descale the relevant machines. 4. Leaving wet grounds inside #

Grounds in a bean-to-cup machine remain warm and wet after brewing. Left in a closed bin, they create odours and sticky deposits. The area beneath the brew unit and the drip tray also collect a mixture of water, particles and oils.

Empty the container when the machine requests it, and do not leave damp pucks for several days during regular use. Rinse and dry only the approved components. Some machines require the bin to be emptied while powered on so that the counter resets correctly. Follow the model's instructions rather than trying to outsmart the alert.

5. Forgetting the milk system or steam wand #

Milk dries quickly in narrow holes, tubes and connectors. Residue may reduce steam performance, smell and create a hygiene problem. The right time to act is immediately after the drink.

  • Purge or rinse the wand or system as instructed.
  • Wipe the outside at once with a clean damp cloth.
  • Run the automatic milk-cleaning programme when required.
  • Dismantle and wash removable parts at the stated interval.
  • Chill milk promptly and do not return heated leftovers to the container.

Do not use a random needle or harsh chemical. The intended tool protects calibrated openings and seals.

6. Filling the grinder with sticky or coated beans #

Very shiny, oily, caramelised, flavoured or sugar-coated beans may stick in an integrated grinder. They can leave residue in the hopper and on parts that are difficult for the user to reach. Flavouring may also affect later coffees.

This does not mean that every dark roast is forbidden. Check the manufacturer's restrictions and avoid sticky or treated surfaces where excluded. Fill only a sensible working amount and keep the reserve properly sealed. The conditions are covered in how to store coffee.

7. Filling or tamping every machine in the same way #

On a manual espresso machine, the grounds are distributed and tamped. In a moka pot, the basket is filled and levelled but not compressed. A bean-to-cup machine requires no manual tamping. The wrong action can obstruct flow or create unnecessary pressure.

Do not exceed the water tank's maximum line. Keep a moka's safety valve above the water and clear of coffee. Do not start an electric machine with an empty tank, and never open a pressurised or very hot component.

8. Using abrasives or a dishwasher without approval #

Abrasive pads, aggressive powders and dishwasher heat can damage aluminium, coatings, plastics and seals. A part is dishwasher-safe only when the manufacturer confirms that status for that exact component.

Use soft tools, lukewarm water and mild detergent only where allowed. Let parts dry before closing them inside the machine. Reinstalling a wet brew unit or milk carafe creates an unnecessarily damp, poorly ventilated space.

9. Storing coffee on top of the warm machine #

A clean machine cannot compensate for badly stored coffee. Heat, air, moisture and light accelerate aroma loss. Ground coffee exposed to humidity may clump and dose irregularly.

Do not store beans, grounds or capsules on the warm top of a machine or beside a sunny window. Keep the daily supply dry and well sealed in a cupboard. A hopper is not an ideal long-term container when only a few drinks are made each week.

10. Never reading the manual #

Two similar-looking machines may have opposite requirements: removable or fixed brew group, filter or regular descaling, backflush or no backflush, hand washing or dishwasher. Even grinder adjustment may need to happen only while the motor is running.

Keep the model number, digital manual, approved products, filter type and explanation of alerts available. Stop improvised attempts if the machine leaks, becomes unusually hot, smells burnt, trips an electrical breaker or shows the same error after prescribed care. Professional diagnosis is safer than another aggressive cleaning cycle.
