The safe way to descale a coffee machine is to find the instructions for the exact model, use the approved product at the specified concentration, complete the intended programme and rinse exactly as directed. Vinegar is not a universal substitute. De'Longhi, for example, explicitly tells owners of its fully automatic machines not to use it.
There is no single procedure that works for bean-to-cup, capsule, manual espresso and filter machines. Tanks, heaters, valves, steam outlets, filter cartridges and software differ. Random volumes, pauses or button combinations copied from another model are therefore not reliable instructions.
The rule that matters most #
If the manual provides a procedure, it takes precedence over general advice. It should establish:
- which product is compatible;
- whether and when a water filter must be removed;
- the required quantities of water and product;
- which outlets the solution passes through;
- whether pauses are automatic;
- how the rinse stage is completed;
- whether a counter or filter setting needs confirmation.
Descaler is an acid solution intended to dissolve mineral deposits without damaging the materials for which it was designed. A stronger concentration or longer soak is not automatically more effective. It may expose seals to unsuitable conditions and make residue harder to rinse away.
What scale can do inside a machine #
Calcium and magnesium compounds in water can form deposits when heated. Warm and narrow parts of the water circuit are particularly affected. Possible effects include:
- slower or uneven flow;
- longer warm-up or less stable temperature;
- weaker steam;
- a noisier pump;
- interrupted programmes or warning messages;
- inconsistent flavour.
None of these signs proves that scale is the cause. A blocked basket, an overly fine grind, air in the circuit or a fault can look similar. Coffee oils, milk residue and removable parts are covered by cleaning and maintaining a coffee machine. Descaler does not reliably remove those deposits.
How often should a machine be descaled? #
There is no universal number of months. Use this order of priority:
- Act on the machine's descale alert or counter.
- Set the real water hardness correctly where that option exists.
- Follow the manual's interval if the appliance has no alert.
- Account for the exact filter cartridge and programmed filter mode.
Water hardness varies considerably between Swiss municipalities. An incorrect setting can distort the machine's calculation. De'Longhi identifies water hardness as a factor in descaling frequency. JURA states that correctly fitted and programmed CLARIS systems remove the need to descale the relevant machines. This is a system-specific difference, not a contradiction that can be solved with a blanket rule such as every two months.
Which product should be used? #
A sensible order is:
- the product recommended by the manufacturer;
- a product explicitly declared compatible with the machine type and its materials;
- vinegar, citric acid or another household method only when the model's manual expressly permits it and supplies the recipe.
Bathroom limescale remover, bleach, foaming household cleaner and abrasive powder must never enter a drinking-water circuit. Do not mix two acids or two descaling products.
Why vinegar can be a poor choice #
Vinegar can dissolve mineral scale, but it has important limitations. Its smell can be difficult to rinse away, the concentration of a household product may not match the appliance, and several manufacturers prohibit it. An approved product is the prudent choice for a bean-to-cup, capsule or pumped espresso machine. Even a simple filter brewer should be treated according to its manufacturer's formula rather than an improvised dilution.
A safe six-step process #
1. Identify the model and official instructions #
Find the model reference on the rating plate and retrieve the official manual. Similar product names may use different programmes. Nespresso consequently provides help by individual model, and other manufacturers also tie instructions to a specific range.
2. Prepare the machine #
Empty the capsule or grounds container and the drip tray. Place a vessel of the required capacity beneath the outlets named in the instructions. Remove a filter cartridge only when directed. Milk containers and tubes follow their own hygiene process and should not automatically be filled with descaler.
3. Mix exactly as specified #
Use the prescribed amount of water and product. A bottle or sachet may be intended for one treatment, but that does not necessarily mean it goes into the tank undiluted. Do not double the dose or add another substance.
4. Complete the intended programme #
On a bean-to-cup or capsule machine, start the model's descaling mode. Do not override its pauses or switch off midway unless safety requires an immediate stop.
For a manual espresso machine or filter brewer without an automatic programme, use the sequence in the official instructions. Whether solution may pass through the group, hot-water outlet, steam wand or filter basket depends on the design. If the manual is missing, retrieve it from the manufacturer or ask support. Do not invent partial cycles.
5. Rinse with the specified volume #
Fill with fresh water and complete the prescribed rinse stage. There is no dependable general rule such as always use two tanks, because internal volumes and programmes vary.
If an acidic or chemical smell remains, do not prepare a drink for consumption. Continue only with rinse steps permitted by the instructions. If the problem persists, stop using the machine and contact the manufacturer or a repair service.
6. Restore settings and components #
Refit or replace the filter if required. Confirm the filter mode, water-hardness setting or maintenance counter only after the process is complete. If flow remains poor, do not repeat several strong treatments. Inspect approved accessible screens, check the grind and error message, or arrange diagnosis.

Common mistakes #
- Treating cleaning and descaling as the same task.
- Using vinegar without checking the manufacturer's approval.
- Leaving a filter in place when the programme requires its removal.
- Cancelling a programme because its pauses appear too long.
- Drinking coffee after an incomplete rinse.
- Continuing despite a leak, burning smell or electrical problem.
- Assuming that every weak flow is caused by scale.
Reducing scale formation #
Set the correct water hardness, use only a suitable filter and replace it at the stated interval. Highly mineralised bottled water may create more scale than local tap water.
