How to clean and maintain a coffee machine

A coffee machine lasts longer and produces more consistent drinks when coffee residue, milk and standing water are removed regularly. Descaling alone is not enough. Coffee oils require a different process from mineral scale, while milk residue should never be left to dry in a warm circuit.

The manual for the exact model takes priority. A bean-to-cup machine, a manual espresso machine, a capsule machine and a filter brewer do not have interchangeable brew groups, programmes or materials. A removable infuser on one De'Longhi model, for example, is not a reason to pull at the fixed brew unit inside a JURA machine.

Slow flow, unusual noise or lukewarm coffee can point towards maintenance, but none proves that scale is the cause. An overly fine grind, a tank seated incorrectly or a component fault can look similar. The mistakes that can damage a coffee machine help separate routine care from problems that need service.

Clean every surface that touches coffee #

Ground coffee leaves fine particles and oils. Particles can obstruct baskets, screens and outlets. Old oils oxidise and may give the cup a dull, bitter or rancid taste.

For a manual espresso machine, the following routine is sensible after a session if the manual allows it:

  • rinse the portafilter and basket;
  • remove grounds trapped below the basket;
  • wipe the accessible group gasket with a clean cloth;
  • run a brief water-only flush;
  • backflush only if the machine is designed for it.

Backflushing is not universal. Machines without the appropriate valve, or models built around a different cleaning method, may be damaged by an improvised blind basket routine. Use a blind basket and detergent only when the manufacturer specifies them.

On a bean-to-cup machine, empty the grounds container when requested and do not leave wet pucks inside for several days during regular use. Remove a brew unit only if it is designed to be removed by the user. Some De'Longhi machines have a removable unit that is cleaned with water after the appliance has shut down fully. Many JURA machines instead use a fixed unit and an integrated cleaning programme. Never force a component or apply detergent to it without instructions.

Clean the milk system immediately #

Milk dries quickly on a warm steam wand, in a tube or inside a carafe. The problem is not limited to foam quality. Residue can smell, block narrow passages and compromise food hygiene.

After every milk drink, follow the model-specific sequence:

  1. Purge or rinse the steam wand or milk system as instructed.
  2. Wipe the outside with a clean damp cloth.
  3. Start the automatic milk rinse or cleaning programme when required.
  4. Dismantle and wash removable components at the specified interval.
  5. Return milk to refrigeration promptly and never pour warmed leftovers back into the original container.

Do not push an arbitrary needle into a nozzle. The wrong tool can enlarge an opening, damage a seal or drive residue further into the path. Use only the tool and method intended for the machine.

Cleaning and descaling solve different problems #

A cleaning programme removes coffee particles and oils. Descaler dissolves mineral deposits in the water circuit. One cannot replace the other.

For a modern machine, the safest option is the manufacturer's recommended product or one explicitly declared compatible. De'Longhi tells users not to use vinegar in its fully automatic machines. Other brands also specify concentrations and sequences. A stronger mixture does not reliably make the job faster and can make rinsing harder or expose seals to an unsuitable acid concentration.

Water, filters and the tank #

Fresh drinking water with a neutral taste is a sound starting point. Very hard water promotes scale. Extremely low-mineral or fully demineralised water is not automatically suitable for every appliance or for balanced extraction.

Useful habits include:

  • refill with fresh water regularly;
  • avoid leaving water stagnant for days;
  • wash and rinse the tank as directed;
  • set the correct water hardness in the menu;
  • use only suitable filter cartridges and replace them on time;
  • never put milk, syrup or flavoured water in the water tank.

A filter's effect is specific to its system. On some machines, it extends the interval between descales. JURA states that correctly installed and programmed CLARIS systems remove the need to descale the relevant machines. That claim must not be transferred to a different brand or a generic cartridge. Protect an integrated grinder #

Very shiny, oily, caramelised, flavoured or coated beans may stick inside some bean-to-cup machines. Residue can accumulate in the hopper and grinder. This does not mean that every dark roast is forbidden. The bean surface and the manufacturer's restrictions are what matter.

  • Put only a sensible working quantity in the hopper.
  • Keep the reserve airtight, dry, dark and away from heat.
  • Never pour ground coffee into the bean hopper.
  • Do not insert water, a vacuum cleaner or a tool into the grinder unless the manual explicitly describes the operation.
  • Adjust a bean-to-cup grinder exactly as instructed. Some controls must be moved only while the grinder is running.

Interpret symptoms before changing everything #

Persistent leaking, a burning smell, abnormal heat or an error that remains after the prescribed care requires the machine to stay out of use. Several aggressive cleaning or descaling cycles in succession are not a repair.

What to avoid #

  • Putting parts in a dishwasher without explicit approval.
  • Running bleach, kitchen degreaser or perfumed cleaner through a circuit.
  • Leaving damp grounds or milk residue for several days.
  • Reinstalling and closing a brew unit or carafe while it is still wet.
  • Forcing a unit that is not designed to come out.
  • Ignoring an alert or trying to clear it by repeatedly unplugging the machine.

Sponges and brushes must suit the material. Abrasives can damage aluminium, coatings, seals and plastics. When the manual is unclear, gentle hand washing of an approved removable part is safer than a more aggressive improvised method.

When a part needs replacement #

Seals, filters, tubes, baskets and milk connectors wear out. Replace a component when it is cracked, permanently sticky, deformed or still smells after its permitted cleaning. A leaking pressure seal or damaged hot-water component should be replaced with the correct original or explicitly compatible part.
